Home-Education Sites

The best way to get more information about home education is to make contact with home-educating families in your area. The following sites provide information about home-educating groups around the UK:

Home-Education.org.uk -  110 pages of independent support and information, plus a web-ring of home-education related sites in the UK. Home page of the home-education discussion group.  Includes a guide to UK support groups.

Education Otherwise - the UK's oldest support group for home-educating families. Legal advice and practical help for people who are experiencing difficulties with their local authority.

www.home-educators.com - This site aims to create an on-line home educators community, with forums, information and resources.

www.takingchildrenseriously.com - There is plenty of free information and articles on this site about taking children seriously. Comments are posted below by people who have passed through the site, and they are particularly interesting to read. 

www.sallylever.co.uk- A useful resource website for those interested in combining sustainable living or downshifting with home education. Sally is a long term home educator, life coach, down shifter and sustainable living enthusiast. You can sign up for her complimentary newsletter, "Fruitful", via her website.

www.dur.ac.uk/p.j.rothermel/ - This site is run by Paula Rothermel who has put on-line her research about home education versus school education.

The following sites provide information about local groups:

New! www.homeeducators.co.uk - Berkshire Home Education site, the group organizes activities for home educated children of all ages. They meet three to four times a week and run a variety of workshops, in a lovely venue set in acres of woodland. Check out the site for more details.

Shropshire Yahoo Group - This is a Yahoo group for home educators in Shropshire.

The Otherwise Club - Home-educating families in the London area who hire a room for social and educational events.


ActivEO  local home-educating group for the mid-south of England


Schoolhouse - Information and support for home educators in Scotland.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EO-TyneAndWear/ - This list is the original group for members of Education Otherwise and all those active or interested in home education for the region of Tyne & Wear of England, United Kingdom.

www.homeeducatorslittlelearnersoasis.co.uk - This is a home education group for Westcliff-on-sea and surrounding areas. There is an on-line forum, and regular gatherings organised, so that home educating families, can meet, play, learn, support each other, and share experiences and ideas. 

www.seeheg.org - SEEHEG stands for the South East Essex Home Education Group, and this is their site, dedicated to providing parents with the necessary information to help them decide if home education is a viable option for them.

 

www.learningprincipals.com   - Consultancy, training courses and a shop selling home school supplies. Created and run by two Christian home educating mothers.

Pre-school home-education:

www.universalpreschool.com Universal Preschool is a site encouraging parents to take care of their children in the early years. There is a large amount of free information, articles, book recommendations and support. Well worth a visit!

Muddle Puddle - Comprehensive site for pre-school and up to age seven.

Day Cares Don't Care- This site questions the idea that child carers are caring.

HES FES - (Home Educators' Seaside Festival) - the world's largest gathering of home-educating families.

The Home Service - Advice and support for Christian home educators.

Homeducation - useful information, interesting articles and links relating to home education in Ireland and the UK.

www.learning-naturally.blogspot.com - This is a brand new home educating blog that describes Fiona Doubleday's experiences and beliefs as a home educator.

www.homeschoolingjourney.com - Homeschooling Journey is a website full of articles on frugal ways to educate children. There are also over 100 free worksheets, and links to free internet resources.

New! www.bloohouse.co.uk. - Bloo House was recently established in Surrey and offers a unique educational environment for home educators and those that feel the traditional school system is not for them.

Steiner education:

Wonder Homeschool - A beautifully presented, and regularly updated site about Waldorf homeschooling. The curriculum guide lists all current sources of Waldorf and holistic curricula. 

Christopherus Homeschool - A comprehensive site about home schooling using Steiner's methods.

www.steinerwaldorf.org.uk - This site gives links to all the Steiner Schools and Teacher training opportunities in the UK.

Courses for Home Educators:

New! www.apresentfromfrance.com - On this site you can order a two-monthly pack to help your child learn French. Included in the pack are toys, games, worksheets, posters, and CD’s with stories and songs. This 'present form France' is designed and produced by a home educating family living in France. 

www.tutorvista.co.uk  - TutorVista is a tutoring company providing online tuition over the internet, and private tutoring, for SATS, GCSE, A-level and other exams.

www.kidstuff.co.uk - This site runs two different courses for children in Electronics: the Electronic Wizards Apprenticeship & The Creative Robotics Weekend Workshop. Both have been very popular with Home educated Children and their parents.

www.tadpole-education.co.uk - Tadpole education is a provider of science learning for home educators, from KS3 to A-level.

www.oxfordhomeschooling.co.uk - Oxford Home Schooling is a commercial organisation which provides GCSE and A'level courses by distance learning to home schoolers between the ages of 13-18.

www.mindkindway.com - A website selling homeschooling software.

www.lochnessproject.org - This site is all about Loch Ness and its famous monster controversy. There are free work packs available on the subject (under 'schools'), which have been used by home educators.

The following is a brief guide to some of the largest North America  homeschooling sites, from which there are links to local groups: 

Jon's Home Page -This is one of the oldest and most visited homeschooling sites in the US. It is non-commercial and has links onto hundreds of other homeschooling sites.

A to Z Home's Cool Homeschooling  - Huge site run by Ann Zeise, based in the United States but with information and links to around the world.

Alternative Education Resource Organisation - Articles and news about alternatives in education, including homeschooling. Like other big US sites, has info relevant to Europe and the rest of the world.

Home Education Magazine - the website of one of America's top homeschooling magazines.

Learn in Freedom - Thousands of links to homeschooling related sites.

State control of education is very strong in most European countries, and home-education, consequently, is still in its infancy:

Alternative Learning - Information and links about Educational alternatives in Europe. 

Legal aspects of homeschooling in Europe - Research article by Amanda Petrie. Makes rather depressing reading as it brings home the weight of state oppression that parents and children labour under in Europe.

Les enfants d'abord - French home-schooling group - with contact addresses.

The Home Service - Advice and support for Christian home educators.

Muslim Homeschool - I don't have a current link to a UK group. This is a link to a North American group of Moslem homeschoolers.

Pagan Homeschool - This is a North American group of pagan homeschoolers.

www.home-education.org.uk - gives the option of getting in touch with home-educators of different religious persuasions by e-mail and also has details of discussion groups for people with specific interests.
